About

Our Roots

At Sutter Creek Coffee Roasting Company, we’re more than a business-we’re a family affair with deep ties to our community. Owners Sarah, Nick, Denise, Todd, lifelong Amador County locals and longtime customers of Sutter Creek Coffee took this beloved roasting company in 2024, with Sarah and Nick bringing their kids -Ava, Ella and Ethan- into the mix to keep the legacy brewing. Nick’s journey started here decades ago as his first job, and now alongside the family they’re roasting small-batch beans with care and commitment. Our customers and neighbors fuel us with support, making every cup a shared story of tradition, family and Amador County roots.

Our Process

Roasting coffee transforms green coffee beans into the aromatic, flavorful beans we know and love. It starts with sourcing high-quality green beans, which are cleaned and sorted. The beans are then heated in a roaster—typically between 370°F and 440°F—where they undergo a series of changes. First, they dry out, turning from green to yellow as moisture evaporates. Next, they hit the “first crack,” a popping sound signaling the beans expanding and releasing steam, shifting to a light brown. For darker roasts, roasting continues to a “second crack,” deepening the color and flavor as oils surface. Throughout the process roasters Todd and Nick monitor time, temperature, and color to achieve the desired roast level. Once done, the beans are quickly dumped in the vented tray with a rotating arm to keep the beans moving and stop the roasting process, then rested 24-48 hours to off gas CO2 before grinding and brewing. It’s a blend of science and art, tailored to highlight each bean’s unique character.

Our Roaster

Our Probat coffee roaster comes original with the company when it’s founders Tom and Ann created Sutter Creek Roasting. It’s renowned for its exceptional quality in workmanship and reliability, a German manufacturer with over 150 years of expertise in coffee processing equipment. It’s a pleasure to operate a fine piece of machinery. Roasters world wide praise this work horse with the ability to produce well-developed coffee across various roast levels, a testament to its precision and dependable design.
